Kreuzberg was named after the mountain in Victoria Park, where a monument in the form of the Iron Cross was erected in 1821. The architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel created this monument to commemorate the liberation after the Napoleonic wars.

Kreuzberg received international fame through its role as a centre of alternative ideology and philosophy in the 70s and 80s and has been frequently referenced in global pop culture.

The Mehringdamm area has developed into a hotspot in Berlin and is becoming increasingly popular among shoppers, bar/restaurant goers and those interested in the street food revolution.
